On the 13 September 2007, Lodge Room 23 in Freemasons’ Hall, London was the venue for something different, when the RMTGB held its first ever Masonic Charity Festival Forum. Representatives from eight Provinces either in Festival or recently having completed a Festival joined with Council Members and Trust Staff to share ideas, learn from each other and explore improved approaches to successful fundraising and organisation of Festival Events.

The Festival system has served the Masonic Charities well for over 200 years, but until now there has been no framework for sharing ideas and learning from others, something which is increasingly important as charity fundraising becomes ever more professional.

The Festival Forum is one of several new initiatives planned by the Trust following a fundamental review of current practice and the development of a new public relations and fundraising strategy.

The culmination of the 2008 Surrey Provincial Festival in support of the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys (RMTGB) was celebrated at the Lakeside Country Club, Frimley Green in May. Best known for hosting the World Professional Darts Championships, it is the largest dining venue in Surrey.

The Pro Grand Master, Lord Northampton, and Lady Northampton together with the new RMTGB President, Dr Mike Woodcock, were delighted to hear that the Province had raised a magnificent sum of £3,559,366 for the Trust.
As part of their fundraising activities, the Province organised the ‘Big Event’, a series of sponsored activities in support of the Trust, which took place in July 2007.

The climax of their efforts was to throw the Provincial Grand Master, Eric Stuart-Bamford out of an airplane at 13,000 feet – albeit with a parachute! This effort raised more than £30,000 for the RMTGB.

During the Festival dinner, seven of the 16 people who joined the PGM in his parachute jump were presented with a special lapel badge marking their achievement. To commemorate his own successful return to earth, the PGM was then presented with his own ‘wings’ by Mike Woodcock.

Other members of the Province raised money by cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End, whilst others climbed Ben Nevis, ran in the London Marathon, walked the length of Hadrian’s Wall or found some other innovative and fun way to raise the big sum.

The RMTGB has teamed up with Everyclick.com to allow supporters to raise money when they are online.

Everyclick.com works just like any other search engine, but allows the users to choose the charity they would like to benefit from their searching. The revenue generated for charities comes from companies that advertise on the site. There is no sign up fee or hidden charge to the user or the charity, it’s free giving. Charities of all sizes are benefiting from this new fundraising service, they range from Cancer Research to small village schools. If 10% of the UK online population used Everyclick.com for their searches, an additional £172,000 would be raised for charity every day.

“Most of us wish we could give more, now we can. Everyclick is a really simple way to raise money for free, just by doing something you already do” said Polly Gowers CEO, co- founder and winner of the WEBA Ethical Entrepreneur of the year 2007. “As we see it, every search that is not raising money for charity is a search wasted.” Everyclick.com has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for charity, please see the website for an up-to-date total.

On Friday the 17th October 2008 the Province of Lincolnshire launched the 2014 Festival in support of the Royal Masonic Trust for Girls and Boys (RMTGB). The launch event was held at the County Assembly Rooms, Lincoln. RW Bro Graham Ives, Provincial Grand Master, Senior Provincial Officers, representatives of the Trust and some 200 Freemasons from across the Province joined together to enjoy a number of presentations outlining the work of the charity, how it is funded and how the Province will need to work with enthusiasm and dedication to meet the target for the Festival.
The presentations took place during a most enjoyable dinner. Following the starter, W Bro. Les Hutchinson, Chief Executive RMTGB gave a moving presentation entitled ‘When Tragedy Strikes’ and shared details of some of the recent cases that the Trust has been able to assist.
The main course was followed by W Bro Keith Emmerson, Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the Petitions Committee of the RMTGB, whose theme was ‘Relieving Poverty, Advancing Education’. Bro Emmerson explained how the Trust is a poverty charity and outlined the types of distress that could qualify a family for support.
The dessert was followed by another presentation by the Chief Executive entitled ‘Their Future in Your Hands’ and concluded with a recent success story and an illustration of the beneficial effects of the support provided.
The Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W Bro John Hockin, gave a rousing presentation in which he outlined the targets for the Festival and the part each Lodge and Mason in the Province would have to take to ensure the Festival was a success.
There are currently 29 beneficiaries receiving the care and protection of the RMTGB from the Province of Lincolnshire. In the last twelve months, almost £106,000 was expended on these beneficiaries alone. Over the last 5 years this expenditure increases to almost £543,000. In addition the RMTGB is supporting Choristers at Lincoln Cathedral and St James’s Parish Church, Great Grimsby. The Province were last in Festival in 2003 when the raised a magnificent total of £2.6M toward the work of the Masonic Samaritan Fund. The original target had been £1.5M.

The launch concluded with an address by the Provincial Grand Master and the RMTGB is confident that under his leadership the Brethren of the Province of Lincolnshire will be motivated to achieve success in their Festival appeal once again.
